Gouging Spikes; an Urban Product

Loyal followers, sometimes something happens in the Football Universe that has to be addressed by the doctors. As you've probably heard by now, Brandon Spikes, star linebacker for the Florida Gators has been suspended for gouging the eyes and face of Washaun Ealey, a Georgia Bulldogs running back. If you haven't seen the video yet, we the doctors of footballology have the technology and the know-how, so we posted it here, for your convenient viewing. Have a look...

As usual, we here at Inside Hook have inside information on all happenings football. In the spring of 2007, one of the docs was in attendance at a Gators spring practice. When what to his wondering eyes did appear but a cock-fight-like spring practice version of the MMA Octagon. That's right, this type of no holds barred, knock-down-drag-out tom foolery is actually encouraged at spring practice by none other than Head Coach Urban Meyer. Perhaps this is the reason for the light suspension. Did we mention that the honorable Mr. Spikes will only sit out for 2 quarters? He probably wouldn't have been suspended at all had he succeeded in removing at least one eyeball. Coach Meyer explained to the visitors at that spring practice that this fight ring exercise, where all the players form a very small, very tight circle around two players who go at it with no rules until one of them is on the ground, as a "toughness building" exercise. Brandon almost got the message, but he wasn't quite tough enough to remove Washaun's nose. One way or another, Meyer is responsible for the actions of his players on the field, and for the kid gloves treatment of them. Even normally squeaky clean Tim Tebow had a comment following the incident. He said something to the effect of 'we weren't doing anything to them that they weren't doing to us.' That isn't a direct quote, but you get the idea. We're thinking that maybe he had the scripture reference for Luke 6:31 on his eye black for this game. That's the Golden Rule, you know, 'Do to others as you would have them do to you.'
Not even the Marine Corps. can get by with their hazing activities, yet coaches like Meyer continue to conduct irresponsible 'toughness exercises' to the detriment of the student athletes. Until we the fans stand up and say 'enough is enough' this type of barbaric nonsense will continue.
